What are the causes of infertility?

It seems like a miracle that any babies are produced without intervention at all once you’ve read this list of the causes of infertility! Believe it or not, this list is not meant to shock you. I’m just trying to help you be educated about what to expect. Being educated is so very important when it comes to your medical care, because then you find out what your alternatives are. So, begin the process of educating yourself with the following list.

Men and women:

· Lubricant – Of all the factors to mention first! If you use lubricant, just confirm that your brand isn’t hostile to sperm. Increased fertility could be as easy as choosing another brand.

· Drugs – Substances such as over-the-counter medication, prescription medication, tobacco, recreational drugs, caffeine and alcohol can all compromise your fertility.

· Stress – You need to be aware of when you’re ovulating to schedule sexual intercourse properly, but if your cycle is messed up because of stress that could make things a little more difficult.

· Timing – Speaking of which, your infertility might just be the result of shoddy timing. There are only roughly 4 days of the cycle when you have any chance of having a baby so be sure that you know when those days are!

· Weight – For guys, being too fat won’t help; and for women being overweight or underweight can damage your capacity to conceive.

· Hormones – Irregular hormone concentrations (too much or too little) may cause conditions like PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome).

· Scarring – Previous abdominal surgery may result in scar tissue which might affect fertility negatively. Scar tissue can also be formed by infections and if you have fibroids in your uterus they may have the same effect as scar tissue.

· Position – Unless you’re in space having sex standing up is unhelpful as the poor lads have to swim against gravity. Make life a bit easier for them and have the guy on top.

· Illnesses – Some diseases or conditions could ruin your fertility, especially STDs, so they may require some intervention.

· Organs etc. – Essentially this is a ‘hardware’ problem where some tube, cavity or appendage isn’t working effectively. For the guys this could include problems such as erectile dysfunction, for the ladies it may include things like fibroids or endometriosis.

· Immune system issues – Sometimes the woman’s body is unreceptive to sperm and regards them as dangerous invaders. Before you get any ideas, the man’s body sometimes destroys his own sperm too!

Girls only:

· Age – After the age of 35 the quantity] of your eggs goes down rather rapidly.

· Abnormal cervical mucus – To be able to conceive the mucus produced by the cervix needs to be the correct consistency and there must be enough of it.

· Premature menopause – This is where the body ceases releasing eggs prior to 40 and might be caused by eating disorders or too much exercise.

Men only:

· Sperm – This is a smallest big problem you can have! If there aren’t enough sperm or they aren’t strong enough or able to swim well then obviously fertility will be compromised.

· Prostate infections – This may also bring about infertility.

· Testes – If the testes are not fully formed, if they haven’t dropped, or if they have been injured then you might have problems with infertility.

· Variococele – Sperm die of overheating when the veins in the scrotum are enlarged.

· Retrograde ejaculation – Sperm take a left instead of a right and wind up in the bladder instead of going out the urethra.

· Illnesses – Diseases such as mumps, cystic fibrosis or kidney disease are known to cause infertility in men.

· Environmental pollutants – Substances such as pesticides and other poisons may decrease the quality and quantity of sperm.

· Tight Undies – Sperm get too hot and die if the testes get too hot because of jocks that are too tight.

As I mentioned at the beginning, this list is not intended to scare you, but to help you. Once you understand the causes of infertility you can work out out what move to make next.
